Britt's Bakery

There's a new bakery in town!

I went to Britt's Bakery yesterday to see what all the hubbub was about.  As I approached the storefront the smell of recently baked pastries was strong in the air, bringing me back fond memories of bakeries I had visited while a missionary in Argentina.  I bought some baked donuts and cinnamon rolls.   They were delicious.   The baked donuts reminded me of facturas from Argentina, though not exactly the same.  Between me and the kids, they were gone quickly.   The cinnamon rolls were big, fluffy, gooey and yummy.  As you might expect, they also offer breads, cakes, cupcakes and cookies.    The cakes looked very creative, showing a variety of themes and styles.  The storefront is clean and neat.  The owners, Matthew and Brittany McDonald, looked just like parents of a new baby -- happy and tired.    Brittany told me this has always been her dream.  She's living it and it's a sweet dream that the McDonalds are sharing with us.   If you're downtown on a stroll, this is a great place to stop and have a sweet treat.

Bridge Club

Every Wednesday at 7pm there is a bridge club meeting at the Moorefield Public Library.   The dues are $3 / partnership to pay for the cards, equipment and cookies in the break room.  There is a good mix of people there from Petersburg and Moorefield and a good time is had by all.  If you have interest in bridge or are a serious card player that wants to learn the epitome of card games, this is for you.  I often attend with my father when our Wednesdays are free.  The competition is stiff, so don't expect to go in and clean up on your first outing.  The last time we went we placed a couple of partnerships above the bottom.  Someone asked me how I felt about our performance that day and I said it felt like I had just gone over some rapids and wiped out.  It was a wild ride that I came out of tired and sore, with maybe a little bit of a bruised ego.  After it's over you look back up the river, shake it off and say, "let's do it again."   Hope to see you there sometime soon.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter Petersburg. Today we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, if you are Christian. If not, fluffy bunnies and ducks and chocolate are good too. I see the sun coming through the clouds, which I find very fitting. The sun is illuminating the church that I can see from my bedroom window. I love the fact that I can see so many churches from my back yard. It's comforting to me as I am a religious man that there are so many religious people here. I know we have our problems. I truly believe that Christ will right the world someday and all ills will be bound up in him. Today, those of us who are Christian celebrate his triumph in the meridian of time. May He triumph in our time and in our lives.

New domain name!

Today we have become petersblogwv.com. This is a big symbolic step into becoming serious about this endeavor. Up to this point, I have been the only contributor. I will be aggressively looking for contributors from local organizations in the near future. Hopefully we'll see contributions from people other than me. If you'd like to contribute anything, get ahold of me or comment to this post.

About Myself

I was born in Morgantown while my father was finishing up dental school.  He moved to Petersburg before I had any memory of Morgantown.  We lived on Welton Orchard road for a few years and then built and moved to the home place in Arthur.   I lived there with my 5 siblings and my parents.  We're a pretty close family and almost everybody knows at least one of us; most likely my dad who has been a family dentist in Petersburg since we moved here in the late 70s.   I attended PES and PHS and graduated in 1994.  I was on the basketball team and sang in the choir.  I also had a small chess club going for 2 or 3 years.   After high school, I attended Potomac State College for 3 semesters.  I then went on a mission for my church to the Cordoba, Argentina area for 2 years.  Upon returning from my mission I attended BYU for a summer session and one semester where I met and married my wife.  We returned to WV and I finished up college at WVU.  I found work at Morgantown and we lived there for a few years.  After a couple of employers I found work as a programmer that I could do from home.  Because with my current employment I could live anywhere, when our house became too small we moved back to the Petersburg area, where we now reside.  We have 5 children, 4 of whom are attending PES.  We're active in our church and Karnsy volunteers at the food pantry.  I've always felt a strong connection to this area as my roots run deep in the families that settled in the tri-counties.  I have fond memories of my childhood and I wanted to provide similar opportunities for my kids.

Welcome

Welcome to the home of the unofficial blog of Petersburg, WV.   In the coming weeks I'll be looking for contributors and posting some of my own musings.  My wife, Karnsy, has expressed a desire to share some healthy recipes and I'd like to make this a place for residents and past residents to come to share stories, brag about kids and their sports teams, share their experiences of local events and so on.  If you have a local organization or live in the area and would like to share stories, send me an email and I'll set you up as a contributor.
